Abstract

The aims of this research are (1) to show forms of expressive speech acts in online news comment columns on social media Instagram and YouTube; (2) explain the meaning of expressive speech acts in online news comment columns on social media Instagram and YouTube; (3) describe the polite language used by netizens in commenting on social media Instagram and YouTube. This research method is a descriptive method and uses a qualitative approach. This research focuses on expressive speech acts in online news comment columns on social media Instagram and YouTube. The data source was obtained from the comments column in online educational news accounts on social media Instagram and YouTube. Data collection techniques are documentation techniques, listening and note-taking techniques. A total of 34 post data were randomly selected in the comments. The results of this research were grouped into 6 (six) speech acts in the form of expressive speech acts of saying thank you 9%, hope 15%, criticizing 23%, complaining 26%, congratulating 18%, and praising 9%, thus the most expressive speech acts found were expressive speech acts of complaining and criticizing. This is because the average Indonesian people have the nature of finding it difficult to be grateful for blessings, difficult to be grateful, and difficult to give praise. In this research, 4 (four maxims) can be found, namely (1) maxim of wisdom; (2) maxim of sympathy; (3) maxim of appreciation; and (4) maxim of consensus.
