For over 2000 years in the West, neurology and psychiatry were regarded as a singular discipline within medicine, commonly referred to as neuropsychiatry. Charcot, Freud, Jackson, and Bleuler, among others, conceptualized a cohesive examination of the brain and mind, irrespective of their particular therapeutic and scientific focuses. During the twentieth century, a rift developed as each of these disciplines diverged. Neurologists concentrated on brain disorders characterized by cognitive and behavioral abnormalities accompanied by somatic manifestations, such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease. In contrast, psychiatrists addressed mood and thought disorders devoid of physical signs detectable through neurological examination of motor and sensory systems, including schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety disorders. A significant number of individuals with mental and neurological diseases lack access to a comprehensive array of evidence-based therapies for prevention and treatment, leading to a substantial treatment gap. This issue extends beyond mental and neurological illnesses, as costeffective therapies in other health sectors are insufficiently available and underutilized. De Savigny and Adams stated, “evidence-based interventions frequently do not meet their objectives, not due to intrinsic flaws in the intervention, but rather because of the unpredictable dynamics of the surrounding system.” Due to the substantial advancement in neurobiological knowledge in recent years and the increasing recognition of disorders previously considered psychopathological but now understood as neuropathological, some neurologistsmay maintain the perspective that their specialty has ascended as the preeminent domain of medical science. Neurologists and psychiatrists must possess a comprehensive perspective, as the realms of deliberate behavior and intentionality (final causation) are brain/mind processes equally significant as sensory perception and movement. The education of future neurologists and psychiatristsmust be rooted in neuroscience while also emphasizing the aspects of professional practice that fundamentally characterize the work of medical practitioners concerning the head and neck.

The domain of neurological research is rapidly increasing. It necessitates a comprehension of neuroscience, psychiatry, and psychology. The attendees of this conference will appreciate the latest advancements in neuroscience education. The Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Sumatera Utara is organizing the 6th International Conference on Neuroscience, Neurology, and Psychiatry (ICoNaP) 2024, aimed at psychiatrists, neurologists, general practitioners, and other relevant specialists, under the theme “Understanding the Brain and Clinical Symptoms: Toward Improved Patient Management.” ICoNAP is an annual event that commenced in 2018. Both domestic and international speakers are invited to the conference from numerous nations. Over the years, the committee has selected speakers fromMalaysia, Singapore, Germany, Australia, India, Thailand, the USA, and France. This year’s conference will feature speakers from Singapore, Malaysia, the UK, Japan, and Australia. Experts and researchers in neuroscience, neurology, and psychiatry will exchange their expertise, opinions, and ideas at the conference. To date, 1187 scholars and professionals have participated in previous ICoNAPs, and case studies and essays may be published in international journals. Additionally, over 100 articles and case studies have been published.

The Hybrid Approach

The committee conducted the sixth ICONAP USU conference utilizing a hybrid meeting format and its proprietary platform (https://ocs.usu.ac.id/ICoNaP/iconap2024). Throughout the outbreak and its aftermath, we identified several features of this platform that are advantageous for such an occurrence. Attendees might view the conference either in person or digitally. At the commencement of each session, all participants convened in the conference room, where only the speakers were permitted to present their work. Participants could submit inquiries in the Q/A area, and presenters addressed them both in person and online. Participants were provided with opportunities to share their findings through e-posters and free papers at the conference.

The conference, currently in its seventh year, provided scholars and practitioners in neuroscience, neurology, and psychiatry an opportunity to exchange ideas. Upon evaluation by reviewers and selection by the editors, articles and case reports will have the potential for publishing in international journals. As of this writing, more than a thousand scholars and experts have participated in previous ICoNAP conferences. Furthermore, more than 154 articles and case studies have been published. The newspaper addressed a diverse array of topics this year, including:

• Patient safety and ethics
• Sexualities from research to application
• Infection and stroke
• The neuroscience of movement disorders
• Gene predisposition of schizophrenia
• Sexual dysfunction and religiosity
• Epilepsy and behavioural problems in the elderly
• Addressing mental health and cognitive problems in diverse population: challenges and solution
• Other related-health issues
