Abstract

Brain development is influenced by many factors including sensory stimulation. Al-Quran sound as a form of auditory stimulation may influence nervous systems related to learning and memory. We investigated the effect of Al-Quran auditory stimulation to NOR (Novel Object Recognition) memory and amount of hippocampal formation cells in in PND (post-natal day) 21 wistar rats. Adult wistar rats divided in intervention and control groups were bred, intervention group exposed to Quranic sound from postcoital day 0 until the born pups reached PND 20. The PND 21 pups were then put in NOR test, and duration of novel and familiar object exploration were documented. The values used were D1 (Exploration Time Difference) and DI (Discrimination Index), each reflecting learning and discrimination aspects of recognition memory respectively. The rats' brains were extracted and processed for cell counting of hippocampal formation stained with Hematoxylin Eosin. The results displayed higher value of D1 and total number of hippocampal formation cells in the Al-Quran groups, suggesting higher learning aspects in recognition memory, more hippocampal neurogenesis or cell survival. However, the DI value between groups was insignificant and it may indicate inappropriate habituation period or interval between NOR phases, inadequate age of animals and brain maturation, or stress factors. In conclusion, exposure to Al-Quran sound in perinatal period may serve as sound stimulation which enhances learning, memory, neurogenesis and cell survival of hippocampal formation. Yet, numerous limitations from this field of research suggest that the biological role of sound stimulation is still in its early stages of development.
