Abstract

The anti-pre-emptive usage of deixis occurs more frequently in courtroom discourse than in ordinary daily communication. This phenomenon has its particular pragmatic functions and effects in the courtroom setting. Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory can be used to develop a proper theoretical model for the explanation of the anti-pre-emptive usage of deixis in courtroom discourse. Through exemplified analysis of legal cases, this paper aims to find out the existing forms of anti-pre-emptive usage of deixis in courtroom discourse, and discuss the pragmatic functions of such phenomenon can bring to courtroom debate.
