The anti-pre-emptive usage of deixis occurs more frequently in courtroom discourse than in ordinary daily communication. Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory can be used to develop a proper theoretical model for the explanation of the anti-pre-emptive usage of deixis in courtroom discourse. Through exemplified analysis of legal cases, this paper aims to find out the existing forms of anti-pre-emptive usage of deixis in courtroom discourse, and discuss the pragmatic functions of such phenomenon can bring to courtroom debate.
