- Abstract
One of the critical issues in Indonesia is the limited time allotment to study in the classroom, therefore, learning out of the classroom is possible to create effective learning. Due to the limited amount of time in class, the learners are encouraged to be responsible for their own learning and learning independently beyond the classroom called as self-directed learning. Despite the importance of this aspect, high school students' perspectives toward self-directed learning, especially in Indonesia, are not clearly explored yet. To figure out the students' perspectives of the issue, the data were gathered from 30 students majoring in language class. Qualitatively, this study described and interpreted students' perspectives and it depicted the students' dependency on school report without having own self-assessment and self-reflection. Regarding the findings of this study, the teachers are expected to raise students' awareness to practice learning independently outside the classroom.
