Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of using experimental methods on science learning outcomes in grade IV students of SD Negeri 2 Tomohon. The background of the study is based on the low science learning outcomes found in students, where learning the is still dominated by lecture methods so that student become passive and do not understand the concept in depth. This study uses a quantitative methoed with a posttest design only control group. The research sample was all forth-grade students consisting of two classes, namely IVA as the experimental class and class IVB as the control class, each consisting of 20 students. The experimental class was given treatment with with the experimental method, while the control class used the lecture method. Data collection was carried out through an objective test of 20 multiple-choice questions that had been tested for validity and reliability and analyzed using the SPSS aplication. The results of the study showed that all questions were valid (r count > r table 0.404) and reliable (Cronbach’s Alpha 0.936). The results of the descriptive analysis showed that the average value of the experimental class (17.50) was higher than the control class (15.70), with a smaller standard deviation in the experimental class. The ANOVA test showed that there was a significant difference between in two groups (Sig. 0.000 < 0.05), which indicated that the experimental method was effective in improving science learning outcomes. In conclusion, the use of the experimental method has a positive and significant effect on students’ science learning outcomes, so it can be recommended as an alternative learning method in elementary schools.
