Abstract

This study investigates the role of translation skills and communication literacy in increasing learners’ engagement in storytelling-based instruction. Data were acquired using a Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach from 102 preservice elementary teachers who participated in English storytelling sessions aimed at improving bilingual competence and oral fluency. The analysis revealed that translation ability had a significant positive effect on students’ active participation (path coefficient = 0.266, T = 2.538, p = 0.011), while communication literacy (path coefficient = 0.193, T = 1.663, p = 0.097) and perceived benefits of English learning (path coefficient = 0.193, T = 1.358, p = 0.175) had no statistically significant impacts. The model explains 33.1% (R2 = 0.331) of the variance in active involvement. These findings highlight the critical significance of translation abilities in promoting student engagement and imply that communication ability may not be sufficient to motivate active involvement. The study helps to advance bilingual pedagogical methodologies by emphasizing the importance of integrated language activities that balance translation and communication skills. Future studies should investigate long-term consequences and refining the distinction between translation and broader communication characteristics. The implications for curriculum design and teaching methods are discussed.
