Abstract

Low writing skills in students have an impact on students’ lack of understanding in obtaining learning information from teachers. Teachers as educators are tasked with improving students’ writing skills, one of which is through writing negotiation texts. Students of class X of SMAN 1 Singosari tend to have weaknesses in writing, especially for long readings, such as in the skill of writing negotiation texts which contain many conversations. This study aims to develop comic strips media to train negotiation text writing skills in class X students of SMAN 1 Singosari through the SQ3R technique (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review). The method used is Research and Development (R&D) with a mixed method approach. Comic strips media was chosen to improve students’ ability to present information in an interesting and easy-to-understand way which is expected to motivate students to be more active in the learning process. The SQ3R technique which includes the steps of Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review, is applied to help students understand the structure and content of negotiation texts and improve students’ critical reading skills. Based on the results of the observation, an intervention was then designed and implemented using comic strips media and the SQ3R technique. The results of the study showed that the application of comic strips media and SQ3R techniques significantly improved students’ negotiation text writing skills. Students showed progress in writing negotiation texts that were good and correct, starting from the structure of the negotiation text to clearly structuring arguments.
