- Abstract
The key purpose of this study was to reveal the mediating mechanism that is potentially established by academic stress on the path between academic self-efficacy and student engagement. Four hundred paper-based self-administered questionnaires were disseminated to undergraduate students at a private university in Malaysia. There was a total of 342 (85.5%) valid and usable surveys retrieved. Data was analysed through Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling. The findings showed that academic self-efficacy effectively alleviates academic stress and improves student engagement. In contrast, the rise of academic stress leads to a decline in the level of student engagement. The result also revealed that academic stress partially mediated the pathway linking academic self-efficacy to student engagement. As such, the university’s senior management can devise strategies in a manner that is beneficial in improving student engagement and reducing academic stress. Academic staff can play their roles to foster students’ academic self-efficacy by providing guidance, encouragement, and regular feedback.
