- Abstract
Background: Non-suicidal self-injury behaviours have been commonly observed among adolescents. At the same time, recent studies suggested that depression might be an independent risk factor for non-suicidal self-injury behaviours. Objectives: This study aimed to explore the efficacy of a two weeks course of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment on adolescent patients of depression disorder, to relive their depressive symptoms, and reduce non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behaviours and intentions within the patients. Method: Within randomized single-blinded trails, 55 adolescent patients of depression disorder with a mean age of 16.75 years (n=55, SD=2.51, range=13-22)were assessed using 24-iterm Hamilton Depression Rating Scale(HDRS), Self-rating depression scale (SDS) and Adolescent Non-suicidal Self-injury Assessment Questionnaire (ANSSIQ) before and after treatment. The patients were divided into four group: Medicated true-Stimulation group, Medicated sham-stimulation group, None-medicated true-stimulation group and None-medicated sham-stimulation group. The statistic of t-tests were used to compare pre /post scores of factors on HDRS, SDS, ANSSIQ. Result: The data shows that after two weeks of rTMS treatment, the depression symptoms of adolescent patients can be relieved. And this treatment has a major effect on reducing the risk of self-injury. Conclusion: rTMS treatment can significantly relive the clinical symptoms of adolescents with depression, and also have a certain inhibitory effect on adolescent non-suicidal self-injury behaviour and intention.
