- Abstract
The word 商 (pronounced Shang) appeared in the Chinese language very early, and has been long used as a basic word. This paper analyzes and sorts out the original literature and Chinese corpora, aiming to clarify the original meaning and historical development of the word Shang. Due to the controversies, this paper analyzes and organizes the original meaning of Shang based on literature review. According to the research results, three interpretations about the original meaning of Shang are more reliable at present: artifacts, totems and stars. After further investigating the extension trend of Shang, the development of the word Shang can be divided into two phases: In the first phase, it refers to the Shang Dynasty and the business operated by the people of the Shang Dynasty; Later, it was used as a morpheme in the vocabulary expressing measurements. Based on this usage, the word Shang began to express discussion therefrom. In conclusion, the meaning of the word Shang has expanded, and gradually abstracted, and the meaning of the word is becoming more and more stable.
