- Abstract
As we know, Culture is the spiritual aspect that can reflects the economy, politics and social development level of a nation, which can be inherited by people and can spread way of thinking, value concept, lifestyles, code of behavior, arts and specific science and technology of a certain country and ethnicity. Culture is an effective means for human communication, and the most convenient way to exchange ideology between different countries. The manifestation of culture can be various, however, in modern information age; culture is being expressed and transmitted through video media at a greater extent than any era in the past which, therefore, embodies more meaning. There is one film attracted more attention this year which was adapted from the cartoon called Mulan by Disney Corporation. As one of two poem masterpieces of Han Dynasty, Mulan Poem describes a fearless woman disguised herself as a male soldier to bravely take her father’s place in the imperial army and finally she risked everything out of love for her family and her country to become one of the greatest warriors China has ever known. Her story has been widespread in Chinese folks and was directed into a cartoon Mulan in 1998 by Walt Disney Pictures which was well-received and successively shot the series Mulan 2. It is obvious that the heroism, feminism consciousness and self-value are highly appreciated by Westerners and comply with their code of values. By contrast, Mulan 2020 failed to recreate the charm and magic of Mulan story, not only in low hit from the audience, but also receiving criticism and bad reviews due to the plot and disappointed performance of the actors. This paper will try to analyze some reasons that account for the misunderstanding of Chinese audience from the perspective of cultural difference between Chinese and Western countries.
