Abstract

In F.S. Fitzgerald’s acknowledged masterpiece The Great Gatsby, he shows the problems hidden behind the rapid economic development in the United States in the 1920s, such as the widening gap between the rich and the poor, the pursuit of material, the loss of faith and so on. These questions create divisions in the novel: The sharp contrast between the East Egg and the Valley of Ashes reveals the social division caused by the gap between rich and poor; West Egg and New York caused the division in desire and cognition; Fitzgerald projects the contradictions in his life into the characters, resulting in the division in the characters. Through the multiple division, nature of the pathological development of society and people’s confusion and struggle in Jazz Age are shown.
