Abstract

The research carried out has a background in the crucial needs of students regarding the management of negative emotions, especially sad emotions. Sad emotions are an aspect that cannot be separated from human life. Sad emotions play an important role in an individual’s experience and well-being. However, prolonged sad emotions can have negative impacts that disrupt students’ daily lives. In severe cases, prolonged sad emotions can trigger self-harming behavior and even suicide. The benefit to be achieved from this research is to obtain information regarding the importance of managing emotions, especially sad emotions in junior high school students. The aim of carrying out this research is to examine the scope of managing sad emotions for junior high school students. The method used in this research is a qualitative research method with descriptive analysis. The subjects in this research were guidance and counseling teachers and class VIII students at SMPN 6 Surabaya. This research uses data collection techniques, namely observation and documentation studies by examining sources of data and information both directly and indirectly related to the management of sad emotions in students. The need for managing negative emotions, namely sad emotions, was obtained through the results of observations carried out through direct observation at school as well as analysis of the results of distributing student needs questionnaires (AKPD) which had been carried out by guidance and counseling teachers at SMPN 6 Surabaya. It is hoped that the results of this research can be a reference for guidance and counseling teachers regarding the problems of expressing and managing emotions in junior high school students.
