Abstract

This study aims to propose a hypothetical model of ethnocounseling, namely Pappaseng Counseling, which is grounded in the local wisdom of the Bugis-Makassar culture to enhance adolescents’ psychological well-being (PWB). The psychological well-being of Indonesian adolescents faces various challenges, indicating the need for culturally relevant interventions. Pappaseng Counseling is developed through a conceptual-theoretical approach by integrating core values of Pappaseng—such as acca (wisdom/competence), lempu’ (honesty), warani (courage), and getteng (resilience)with Ryff’s dimensions of PWB and the principles of ethnocounseling. The model comprises systematic stages, from building a therapeutic alliance to evaluation, employing specific techniques derived from the Pappaseng tradition. Pappaseng Counseling has the potential to make a significant contribution to counseling practices in Indonesia by offering an empowering approach that aligns with the cultural context of Bugis-Makassar adolescents and supports their holistic psychological well-being. Further research is needed to empirically test the validity and effectiveness of this model.
