- Abstract
This systematic literature review (SLR) deconstructs the integration of Maritime English proficiency assessment, specifically the Marlins English Test, with emerging digital tools, including Moodle LMS, gamification, virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), and adaptive instructional systems. Through a PRISMA-compliant structure selection of 50 core studies from 405 initial candidates spanning Ukraine, Malaysia, Indonesia, and China (2014–2026), the study reveals that gamification and VR quantitatively enhance intrinsic motivation and Standard Marine Communications Phrases (SMCP) vocabulary acquisition by +18%. While the role of structural e-learning anchor continues to be dominated by Moodle LMS, digital literacy gaps of senior instructors continue to highly bottleneck its operational efficiency. AI displays unprecedented potential for cognitive personalization, yet actual implementations remain confined to pilot phases with limited empirical validation. Synthesized findings formulate a multi-layered digital framework to guide future maritime education regulations aligned with STCW conventions.
