- Abstract
The failure to consider the complex mother-daughter relationships in The Sound and the Fury has effectively nullified motherhood and daughterhood as values. Only when we recognize the methods by which mothering in all its dimensions has been “charged” and “turned against” women, can we hope to resist the limitations inherent in the idealized concept of a “heart’s darling.” The critical assumptions governing these readings offer stunning and instructive examples of how patriarchy works to preserve its values and guarantee its authority.
