- Abstract
Low digital literacy in society needs to be addressed. This issue makes people more susceptible to fake news, hoaxes, or misinformation. The spread of fake news, hoaxes, or misinformation occurs throughout the day, especially as democratic events approach. People compete to win the public’s vote. This study aims to measure the level of digital literacy possessed by students of the Faculty of Social Sciences, State University of Jakarta, in relation to the democratic event, the 2024 Presidential and Vice-Presidential Election. The research employs a quantitative approach, measuring dimensions of digital literacy, namely: socio-emotional skill, information skill, and critical skill. The population for this study comprises all active students of the Faculty of Social Sciences in 2024, with a sample of 98 students selected using a cluster random sampling technique. Descriptive tests were conducted for each dimension. The results of the descriptive test indicate that the socio-emotional skill dimension has a higher average index score compared to the information skill and critical skill dimensions. The next highest dimension is information skill, followed lastly by critical skill. This indicates that students demonstrate individual caution in managing personal information on the internet, including emotional capability in handling digital information related to the 2024 Election. The study also shows that students have developed the ability to determine the necessary amount of information and compare sources to assess its accuracy. These abilities can influence the decision to adopt misinformation. Consequently, when students encounter incorrect information, they are less likely to disseminate it to others. Therefore, based on these results, students need to enhance their ability to compare multiple sources and understand their information needs to avoid falling to hoaxes during the presidential election.
