Abstract

The study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of problem-focused coping on the relationship between job insecurity and impression management. Drawing on Transactional Stress Theory to explain the mediation model, we argued that perceived job insecurity would activate individual's problem-focused coping, and in turn, would lead to high levels of impression management. Data were collected among employees from nine organisations in Jakarta (N = 286) and were analysed using Hayes's PROCESS macro on regression analysis of SPSS version 20. The results showed that the indirect effect of job insecurity and impression management via problem-focused coping was significant. However, contrary to our expectation, we found that perceived job insecurity weakened individuals’ ability to activate problem-focused coping, and in turn led to reduced willingness to perform impression management.
