Abstract

Shifan of Kunqu Opera in Suichang use folk musical instruments to play traditional Kunqu Opera music. Shifan is a characteristic form of music of the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions of China. The typical instruments in a Shifan ensemble have a unique timbre and ensemble sonority. Shifan instruments (the reed whistle meyguan, edge blowing qudi, plate vibrating tiqin and shuangqing, and membrane vibrating huqin and sanxian) can achieve sonorous balance, contrast, and complementarity. These characteristics are formed by the arrangement and collocation of traditional musical instruments’ form, structure, and sound characteristics.
