Abstract

This paper operationalizes the general unfolding model for polytomous responses under the condition of equal-distances between the successive thresholds of an item. Using the joint maximum likelihood estimation (JML), two algorithms are proposed for parameter estimation, each with a different technique to reduce the bias in the estimates produced by the inconsistency of the JML. One algorithm is a direct extension of the algorithm described in [15] in which a correction is applied on the mean latitude of acceptance parameter. Simulation studies show the efficiency of the algorithms in various situations. An analysis of real data is included for illustrative purposes.
