- Abstract
The publication presents the Petrograd/Leningrad phonetic institutions of the 1930s, that have been most relevant for working out a comprehensive investigation of language sound structure as well as for popularizing phonetics proper, but are underestimated, indeed forgotten at present. These institutions were the Laboratory of experimental phonetics, the Phonetic Institute, the Phonetic School of new languages, the Institute of Living Word, the History of Art Institute and the Institute of Speech culture. It is in these institutes and schools that teaching phonetics, developing phonetically oriented foreign language teaching methods, research projects and the publication of academic journals and paper collections were carried out. Quite a few academics, who laid the basis for contemporary phonetics and phonology, worked in them: S.K.Bulich, L. V. Scherba, S. K. Boyanus, S. I. Bernstein, L. P. Jakubinskij, V. N. Vsevolodskij-Gerngross, M. I. Matusevich, O. N. Nikonova and many others.
