Abstract

There is less difference between versions of English phoneme /l/ [ ] and [l] than between Russian [l] and [l']. While adopting English words Russian native speakers can perceive English [ ] close to the Russian [l] and pronounce an English word in Russian with [l], but also they can perceive [ ] not as a Russian [l] and pronounce an English word in Russian with [l']. Due to the large number of new loanwords in Russian language, there is an increase of hard and soft consonants pairs in Russian language that can be distinguished in position before /e/. Replacement of soft consonants with their hard pairs is also prestigious.
