- Abstract
Gray's odes of prophecy The Descent of Odin and The Fatal Sisters, which he rendered from the Norse, represent the feminine power of prophecy revealed in the Older Edda (Balder's Fate and The Song of the Valkyries). Gray follows the poetics of the Edda songs with their uncertainty, ambivalence, and vagueness where many things are not defined but mostly implied that fully corresponds to the language of prophecy because the major theme of the odes is prophecy and the heroines are prophetic maids able to predetermine the fate of the world.
