Abstract

This study is intended to protect farmers in the agricultural trade sector. The position of farmers as the main subject in the development of the agricultural sector needs to be considered, especially regarding the welfare of farmers. The agricultural sector is one of the leading sectors and is the economy’s foundation. This sector is the most significant contributor to Indonesia’s economic backbone. Thereby, the agricultural product trade system policy needs to be built to protect farmers in developing and supporting the agricultural sector. This type of research uses a juridical-normative approach with a conceptual approach and laws and regulations. The researchers also used field data to strengthen the phenomenology and phenomenography of farmer welfare using unstructured interviews. This study’s results indicate that farmers are not protected against an optimal agricultural product trade system. Farmers are disadvantaged because the trading system is always left to the market mechanism. Thereby, a farmer protection policy for the agricultural trade system is urgently needed so that farmer welfare can encourage the development of the agricultural sector. In addition, the multiplier effect of the construction of farmer protection is to prevent the degradation of young farmers as the next generation in developing the agricultural sector.
