Abstract

The development of the world of education encourages teachers to always develop their learning process, but in the learning process students’ problem solving abilities are not optimal. This study aims to determine differences in problem-solving abilities between students who apply project-based learning and students who apply a scientific approach. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a post-test only design with 66 students as the research sample and the samples were taken from all students of class XI SMA in Seyegan Regency, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Post-test only data was collected using a problem solving ability test (8 items). The data analysis technique uses an independent sample t-test and a description of the percentage of students’ post-test results. The results of this study indicate that there are significant differences in students’ problem-solving abilities between the experimental and the controls. Students in the experimental class have higher problem-solving abilities compared to students in the control class. The findings from the implementation carried out have a significant influence on problem solving abilities. Thus it can be concluded that project-based learning can improve problem solving abilities. Thus, the use of project-based learning is highly recommended in chemistry learning, because it has the potential to develop students’ problem solving abilities.
