Abstract

Thematic structures have been extensively studied for the powerful textual functions they display. This paper explores the cognitive mechanisms underlying the coherent functions of thematic structures in literary text with the application of Event-domain Cognitive Model (ECM). It has been found that the cognitive mechanisms for coherence are reflected in four aspects: centralizing and constant progressions achieve coherence by revealing linear and hierarchical, dynamic and static, prominent and gestalt features; parallel and centralizing progressions by displaying prominent feature; constant and extended progressions by embodying dynamic and static features.
