Abstract

The Boxer Codex is an illustrational manuscript that was compiled by the Spaniards in Manila during the late sixteenth century to the early seventeenth century. It is an encyclopedic manuscript that consists of the geography, history, religion and ethnography of Southeast Asia and East Asia. The Boxer Codex incorporated the illustrations from Ming China which were painted by Chinese illustrators, and the Chinese illustrations were attached with textual descriptions written by the Spaniards in Manila. This article aims to explore the six illustrations of Chinese figures on The Boxer Codex. With the support of Ming sources, this article expands from the costume, hairstyle and facial characteristics of the Chinese figures. It analyzes how the Spaniards acquired and compiled the information about the social structure of Ming China with the help of the Chinese illustrators in Manila, and how the Spaniards established the specific China images under the Eastern and Western cultural interaction during the late sixteenth century.
