Abstract

The “Plain English” concept emerged in English-speaking countries at the beginning of the 20th Century, and was developed into a popular movement in these countries during the late of the 20th Century, which in order to have the language itself simplified, particularly in the part of writing. The characteristics of “Plain English” in the United States can actually be traced back to the 17th Century, when American Literature was initially emerged. This can be proved by the contrastive studies between early works of American Literature, other literature works of the same period, and the concepts of modern Plain English. The understanding of these characteristics can also be helpful of improving the quality of English-teaching.
