- Abstract
Giuseppe Castiglione was an Italian court painter who entered the Qing Dynasty in the 54th year of Kangxi’s reign. He was good at painting horses, portraits of people, flowers, birds and beasts and specialized in the combination between Western painting techniques and traditional Chinese ink painting, which contribute to a new painting style. During his stay in China, Giuseppe Castiglione created a large number of masterpieces with high historical and artistic value with amazing artistic expression. These works which represented the convergence of Chinese and Western cultures recorded the most brilliant historical achievements of the Qing Empire with wonderful ink painting, vividly representing the prosperity in the prosperous period of Kangxi and Qianlong. Baizi painting is a popular custom theme since the Song Dynasty, it has been deeply respected and loved by emperors and scholars since ancient times, implying both good fortune and longevity. Baizi painting is the product of Chinese traditional culture, which exudes strong Chinese feelings. Giuseppe Castiglione used Chinese and Western meticulous craftsmanship to vividly express the playfulness among children. In this painting which has a special flavor, the composition is patchy, the primary characters and secondary characters are distinct, the picture is delicate and simple, the coloring is gorgeous and refined.
