Abstract

This article presents a comparative study of the linguistic landscapes of religious sites in two Chinese cities: Hong Kong and Guangzhou. Six religious sites were selected, including a Taoist temple, a Buddhist temple and a Catholic church in Hong Kong, as well as a Taoist temple, a Buddhist temple and a Christian church in Guangzhou. All observable linguistic landscapes in the public space of these selected sites were recorded by a digital camera. By reviewing these two cities’ demographic backgrounds and related policies and comparing the collected linguistic landscape samples through a mixed-method approach, this research found similarities in basic language patterns but some ideological differences existing in language diversity and the level of English usage in Hong Kong and Guangzhou.
