Abstract

Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6) targets universal access to safe water and sanitation by 2030, defined by 8 targets and 11 indicators. Targets 6.1 and 6.2 specifically address safe drinking water and adequate sanitation, core elements of SDG6. Despite significant progress, Bangladesh faces ongoing challenges such as resource limitations, climate change, urbanization, and rural-urban disparities. There are also significant inequalities in access to sanitation and hygiene services between rural and urban areas, and there is a lack of information on sanitation and hygiene services in rural Sylhet. To assess the existing conditions related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6.1 and 6.2 in rural areas of Sylhet Sadar upazila of Sylhet district, namely Basirpur village, a household-based survey of 100 people has been conducted. According to the findings of this study, access to safely managed drinking water services is 41%, access to safely managed sanitation is 51%, and the basic hygiene service level is 87%. The prime constraints against using hygienic sanitation are economic, lack of proper knowledge, and unawareness of health impacts, each accounting for 33%, 33%, and 34% respectively. By improving access to clean water for drinking, ensuring adequate sanitation, promoting good hygiene practices, raising awareness of health issues, and improving the socioeconomic status of rural areas, efficient monitoring and evaluation, people’s physical well-being can be improved, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6.1 and 6.2 can be achieved.
