Abstract

Traditional myoelectric prosthetics are often prohibitively expensive due to space constraints, high motor costs, transmission complexity, advanced technology, custom fitting, and premium materials. This study aims to develop a cost-effective, functional, and accessible myoelectric prosthetic wrist that enhances user experience and reduces production costs by addressing common chal-lenges faced by prosthesis users and integrating advancements from existing re-search. The compact design accommodates all levels of trans-radial amputees and utilizes readily available electronics and sensors for ease of manufacturing. Basic movements, like grabbing, are controlled via electromyography (EMG) signals, ensuring intuitive operation. Since static wrist prosthetics can cause compensatory movements leading to repetitive strain injuries, this design incorporates wrist flexion and extension. Additionally, thumb flexion, extension, and individual fin-ger control enhances grasping versatility. The use of flexible thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) fingers allows secure handling of varied object shapes without causing damage. Extensive material and design testing has achieved optimal flexibility and elasticity. 3D printing technology ensures cost-effectiveness and customizability, significantly reducing production costs. The prosthetic supports multiple control methods, including a graphical user interface (GUI) and voice commands, which can function simultaneously. Initial testing confirms the device’s ability to grasp objects via various interaction modes, improving accessibility and usability for upper-limb amputees and enhancing their quality of life.
