Abstract

Narajanganj is a historic industrial port city located in the south-east of Dhaka city. Rapid urbanization and economic growth in the last several decades made Dhaka and Narayanganj to function as a common economic whole. As urban agglomeration processes continue within the greater Dhaka region, one of the world’s fastest growing and most congested mega cities, ensuring sustainable mobility between Dhaka and Narayanganj is very vital. However, Dhaka Narayanganj commuters are mostly captive riders as options for public transportation services are limited to only poorly organized bus and train services. The objectives of this study are to (a) perform comparative characteristic analysis of commuter train and bus (AC and Non-AC) services and identify operational issues accordingly; and (2) provide planning level recommendations for improving mode (bus and train) specific service quality including service reliability (i.e., reducing travel/journey time variability). The methodology utilizes both qualitative and quantitative research approaches requiring literature review, reconnaissance survey (field visit) as well as collection of empirical data (ridership and operational service characteristics) and questionnaires surveys. Among the service quality issues identified include service reliability, safety/security and comfort/convenience issues with both modes (bus and train). Recommendations are made to improve identified service quality issues. It is expected that the findings and recommendations would help decision makers to take necessary actions in the improvement of bus and train based commuter services between Dhaka and Narayanganj for the sake of sustainable mobility and regional economic growth.
