Abstract

Three characteristics of meta-pragmatic awareness are discussed in the thesis—salience, reflexivity and self-monitoring. The latter two are more prominent in the generation and choices of language. One is the reflexive comments of language on itself, the other is the observation and monitoring of consciousness upon itself. The thesis also probes into the explicit and implicit indicators left by meta-pragmatic awareness in perspective of phonetics, lexical level, syntax and discourse, as well as their pragmatic implications.
