- Abstract
The old man named Santiago in He-mingway’s novel The Old Man and the Sea was materially poor but spiritually wealthy. Hemingway presented us a strong-minded figure by putting him in contrast with the ordinary people, in fight with the shark, in connection with the lit-tle boy, and in harmony with the peaceful sea. What Hemingway thought highly of was apparently Santiago’s struggle with and also his pride over difficulties in life.
