- Abstract
Eileen Chang wrote “When I Was Young” during a turbulent war period. Due to the unique circumstances of the times and her family, Chang left a lasting imprint in her works, developed archetypal characters, and expressed her inner voice through simple stories. The seemingly unremarkable tale of a meeting contains a depth that goes beyond love; beneath the surface of this tragic love affair lies the struggle for identity and cultural hegemony.
