Abstract

Multiple slopes varying from 25° to 30° were designed and constructed in different areas of a highway project in Northern Virginia. High modulus and high-strength geosynthetics were required to ensure the sliding stability of 11 m slopes up to. For some slopes, polyester geosynthetics with up to 1000 kN/m ultimate strength at less than 10% were used as basal reinforcement instead of ground improvement up to 7 m depth located downstream. The slope stability analyses using a basal reinforcement were carried out in 2D and 3D using Slide2 and Slide3, respectively. The problem formulation, considerations, and final results obtained are presented.
