China’s Smart Cities Policy and Corporate Research and Development Intensity - A Quasi-Natural Experiment

Abstract

In this paper, we explore the impact of smart city policies on corporate R&D using a sample of Chinese a-share listed firms from 2008–2018. Our findings show that smart city policies have a catalytic effect on local firms’ R&D compared to cities that were not selected as smart cities. In addition, we find that firms with different characteristics exhibit heterogeneity in this process. Specifically, Chinese resource-based cities and southern cities are more influenced by this policy.
