Several conversations about climate adaptation technologies, environmental and farm justice, planting and harvesting automation, small business innovations in agriculture, sustainable farming systems, food security, and bioprocessing products technology set the stage for the September 7–9, 2022, National Conference on Next-Generation Technologies for Small-Scale Producers. The purpose of the conference was to bring farmers, scientists, extension agents, and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) together to share ideas about climate adaptation, computers and cyber security, farm justice and food security, planting and harvesting automation, small business innovations, and sustainable farming. The conference will teach next-generation farmers to be better question-askers and create a roadmap that ensures access to sustainable technologies with consideration for affordability and applicability. There is a need for holistic understanding of how sustainable technologies—air, water, land, and waste management research, lead to technology adoption and solution integration.

The National Conference on Next-Generation Technologies for Small-Scale Producers was sponsored by North Carolina A&T State University (College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences), Alabama A&M University (Small Farms Research Center), Alcorn State University (The Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers Policy Research Center), Virginia State University (Small Farm Outreach Program), Carolina Farm Stewardship Association, 1890 Universities Foundation, U.S. Department of Agriculture (NIFA), U.S. Department of Agriculture (ARS), and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
