Abstract

This study aims to investigate the intricate relationships among school satisfaction, problem behavior, subjective well-being, and depression in elementary and middle school students. A sample of 2,341 students aged 9 to 15 was evaluated using standardized instruments: the School Satisfaction Scale, Problem Behavior Self-Assessment Questionnaire, Subjective Well-Being Questionnaire, and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). The results revealed significant associations: school satisfaction was positively correlated with subjective well-being and negatively associated with both problem behavior and depression; problem behavior showed a negative correlation with subjective well-being but a positive one with depression; subjective well-being was negatively linked to depression. Furthermore, both problem behavior and subjective well-being served as parallel and sequential mediators in the relationship between school satisfaction and depression, with individual mediation effects accounting for 22.03% and 33.75% of the total effect, respectively, and a serial mediation effect of 2.99%. In conclusion, school satisfaction not only directly affects adolescent depression but also indirectly influences it through the mediating roles of problem behavior and subjective well-being, functioning in both parallel and chain mediation pathways.
