Proceedings of the 7th International Symposium on Mathematics Education and Innovation (ISMEI 2022)

Conference name: Proceedings of the 7th International Symposium on Mathematics Education and Innovation (ISMEI 2022)
Date: 5-6 October 2022
Location: Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia (Hybrid)

Numeracy has become the current buzzword of Indonesian mathematics education since the Ministry of Education and Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemdikbudristek-RI) launched the AKM (Asesmen Kompetensi Minimum- Minimum Competency Assessment) program. Together with literacy, numeracy is the minimum competency measured in the AKM. This policy is expected to foster a learning culture that places students as the main focus and the paradigm shift from simply teaching the content to developing the students’ competence in a constructive and adaptive manner.

Currently, numeracy has become a point of discussion at national and international levels, which is followed by various misconceptions and misinformation. One of the efforts of the South East Asia Minister of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Regional Centre for Quality Improvement of Teachers and Education Personnel (QITEP) in Mathematics, also known as SEAMEO QITEP in Mathematics or SEAQiM, in supporting teacher professionalism is through the International Symposium on Mathematics Education and Innovation (ISMEI).

ISMEI is a biennial event initiated and organized by SEAQiM. This activity is a space for disseminating works and exchanging ideas about innovations in mathematics education for teachers, education staff, policymakers, and related stakeholders. This symposium aims to (1) provide an international platform for practitioners, policymakers, and stakeholders in the fields of education on mathematics to share ideas and experiences, learn new knowledge and good practices, and disseminate the latest research results; (2) contribute to the topic of numeracy, especially in the Southeast Asia region; and (3) build and expand academic cooperation networks at the regional level.

In 2022, ISMEI was held for the seventh time in blended (offline and online) mode, with the theme “Transforming Education by Reimaging Numeracy Learning”. Through this theme, ISMEI invited education practitioners to transform education by reviewing mathematics learning practices to develop numeracy and discussing its potential in future. The sub-themes that were included within this theme are the following:

– Computational Thinking, Coding, and Robotic in Mathematics Learning
– ICT in Mathematics Learning
– Integrative STEM Education
– Online Distance Mathematics Learning during Pandemic
– Statistical Literacy
– Mathematical Modelling
– Ethnomathematics
– Numeracy
– Curriculum and Assessment
– Higher-Order Thinking Skills
– Action Research
– Design/Development Research

The programs offered by ISMEI consist of plenary speaker sessions, keynote sessions, parallel presentation sessions, poster presentations, and workshops. The plenary and keynote speakers were given 30 min for presentations and Q&A sessions. Next were paper presentations divided into four parallel sessions and three rooms. Each presenter had 15 min to present their papers, after which the audience could ask questions and provide comments or suggestions. The conference ran well, although some technical challenges also happened during the conference.

Finally, we thank everyone who has contributed and supported this conference. There would be no conference without the hard work of committees, invited speakers, keynote speakers, parallel presenters, reviewers, etc. Thank you very much for all the support and help.
