- Abstract
The conception of the female Muslim (hereafter Muslimah) community “Ummida” under the auspices of the mosque of Jogokariyan kampung contributes to the sustainability of urban resource development. In this article, we investigate the structural changes within this Muslimah community. This research used the life-history method based on historical documentation, observation, and interviews. Following the socio-cultural approach of Max Weber and Norbert Elias, we observed changes within the Muslimah community, and in particular the ways that support from husbands and male and female religious leaders encouraged and empowered women to achieve a degree of gender equality.
