- Abstract
This paper provides a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the systematic design innovation ideas embedded in “Kaogong Ji,” an ancient Chinese technological literature on craftsmanship. By meticulously examining the holistic design thinking, harmony between design and the natural environment (“Heaven has its seasons”), regional characteristics and material selection (“Earth has its energies”), the unity of material aesthetics and performance (“Materials have their beauty”), and craftsmanship and innovation (“Craftsmen have their skills”), this paper reveals the inspirational and guiding value of “Kaogong Ji” for modern design practices, offering new perspectives and thought paths for contemporary design fields.
