Abstract

This paper examines the critical role of youth in advancing the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and fostering a shared ASEAN identity within the ASEAN Community. With youth making up more than a segment of the ASEAN population and a majority under the age of 30, they are a critical force for innovation and progress. The analysis identifies key contributions of youth, including leveraging digital skills, engaging in the political system, and initiating grassroots activities. The study also highlights barriers such as limited financial resources, expertise, and scope of impact, which emphasize the need to align youth-led initiatives with the SDGs where their influence is most effective. The authors discuss fostering an ASEAN identity as a foundation for sustainable development, arguing that unity in vision and action across member states is essential. Through case studies, the paper showcases youth-led projects across the region, addressing SDGs related to education, health, employment, climate action, and community development. Programmes such as the ASEAN Youth Volunteer Programme and the Green Summer Campaign illustrate the transformative potential of youth engagement. Finally, the paper underlines the interconnectedness of ASEAN identity and SDG implementation, advocating for policies that empower youth as agents of change. The paper concludes with recommendations to prioritize youth-friendly SDGs and encourage collective efforts to build a sustainable and cohesive ASEAN Community.
