Leech’s Politeness Principle Used by Teachers in English Language Teaching

- Abstract
This study investigates the types and forms of politeness principle used by the teachers in English language teaching. Further, it also aims at finding the types and forms of politeness principles that are frequently used by the teachers. This study focuses on analyzing all utterances containing Leech’s politeness principle used by the teachers. In collecting the data, this study uses the documentation technique. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive analysis method. The result of this research showed that there are nine types of Leech’s politeness principles: tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, agreement maxim, sympathy maxim, feeling reticence maxim, opinion reticence, obligation of S to O, and obligation of O to S. While the forms of Leech’s politeness principle found in this study are declarative, interrogative and imperative.
