Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the potential of herbal medicine pulp microparticles as a feed additive for laying hens by analyzing its proximate composition and antioxidant activity. The herbal medicine pulp used consisted of a combination of turmeric, ginger, sambiloto, brotowali, tamarind, and betel leaf pulp. The use of microparticle technology in this study is expected to increase the bioavailability of bioactive compounds in herbal medicine pulp. In addition, it is also stated that adequate antioxidant and proximate compounds in animal feed are known to improve immunity, growth, and survival of these animals. Based on the results obtained in the proximate analysis, the herbal pulp microparticles have dry matter content (92.98%), ash (3.96%), crude protein (9.51%), crude fiber (19.36%), and crude fat (2.20%). Meanwhile, based on the antioxidant activity evaluated using DPPH test, the IC50 value was 153.72 microgram per gram, It states that this relatively low IC50 value indicates good antioxidant potential of herbal pulp microparticles. It could be concluded that the utilization of herbal pulp microparticles as a feed additive for laying hens can provide multiple benefits, namely increasing nutritional intake and providing antioxidant protection to the livestock. Further research is needed to evaluate the specific impact of herbal pulp microparticles on egg production performance, egg quality, and overall health and welfare of laying hens.
