Abstract

This paper discusses the explosive spread of disinformation under Covid-19 due to increased public use of social media. With the public unable to judge right from wrong, mass emotions can be affected, especially in societies in the midst of a Covid-19 outbreak, where misunderstood or insensitive language may be amplified in social media and mass emotions become more sensitive. Disinformation on the internet affects people’s independent judgement and appeals to emotion reduce the audience’s incentive to verify sources and question the authenticity of news, objectively reducing the cost and resistance to the spread of fake news and leading to mass anxiety due to misinformation. Covid-19 outbreak, disinformation may mislead the masses to use the wrong methods to defend themselves against the virus, leading to life-threatening risks.
