Discuss the Selection of Interview Dates—Consider the Innate Differences of Matching Departments

- Abstract
For most departments of a selected university, this article first calculates the matching comparison performances of correct selection rate, the reserve rate, and the distribution rate, in the 2014-2016 academic years and the 2018-2020 academic years respectively; Then, it compares the difference of such two matching comparison performances. In this way, this article can more clearly observe the difference between early and late interviews on admissions performance. The findings of this article are as follows: 75% of the whole matching comparisons have sufficient evidence to prove that the departments interviewed later have a higher correct selection rate; 33.3% of the whole matching comparisons confirm that the departments interviewed later have a lower reserve rate; 50% matching comparison confirms that the department will have a higher distribution rate for the late interview. This result is similar to the result of Zu(2020b) in the correct selection rate and reserve rate, but is significantly better than the result of Zu (2020b) in the distribution rate (50% vs. 8%). Based on this, this article claims that after controlling for the impact of the innate differences of matching departments, choosing a later interview can indeed increase the distribution rate of individual applications for the department.
