Abstract

The demand for corn is increasing every year; therefore, increasing the productivity of corn is crucial. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) are microbes that can promote plant growth from the beginning of the germination process. The germination process is the initial point of plant growth and development, and this process can increase crop productivity. This research aimed to determine the effect of PGPB application and determine the consortium of PGPB that is effective in increasing the viability and vigor of sweet corn and popcorn seeds. This research adopted the bio-priming technique, whereby the corn seeds were soaked in a PGPB suspension. The popcorn and sweet corn seeds were germinated using planting media for 14 days. The parameters of vigor index (VI), germination potency (GP), maximum growth potential (MGP), growth speed, wet weight of normal sprouts, dry weight of normal sprouts, plant height, and plant root length were observed. The results showed that that bio-priming treatment did not statistically affect the parameters of viability, vigor, and plant growth. Bio-priming treatment with Brevibacillus sp. led to higher values of viability and vigor parameters. The growth parameters of popcorn seeds were higher than those of sweet corn seeds.
